MAGAZINE POUCH:
Standard Russian production four pocket pouch, this example dated 1993. Stripper clip slots have been lengthened to reach below the bottom reinforcement sew line. The oiler bottle side pocket has a cotton flap, while the tabs are dark brown leather. Some versions have leather oiler pocket flaps. Both black and brown leather versions exist. These pouches have varied little in color since their inception, most being a light green, and there seems to be no chronological order for some being dark and some lighter, other than the lot of the materials. Inside of main flap is normally stamped with white or black Russian manufacturer's inkstamps, which often include "OTK" and date. Most have a very high quality fit and finish. Brass tab thorns are standard.
RIFLE SLING:
This is a late pattern Russian AK sling, with D-ring snap hook on one end and the captive belt buckle on the other. Finish of the hardware is either zinc dichromate or cadmium plating. The web material is the traditional tight weave cotton. Loop material is of dark brown leather. Some late model slings have pebble textured leather. Slings almost always have white or black stencilled Cyrillic manufacturing emblems, or military contract data, stamped into the backside of the web strapping, to include in some cases, legible dates. |

The overall webbing material is a medium weight cotton textile. Flap inner side stamped with inkstamps. Hardware (tab thorns) are natural brass. The cleaning kit is of the metal tube type, and the stripper clips are displayed with the loader (1) in place on the lead clip. The oiler bottle is black plastic, with the raised emblem of the Izhevsk Arsenal (Arrow-in-Triangle) molded in. |

MAGAZINE POUCH:
Bulgarian version of Russian 4-cell 5.45mm pouch, using a slightly lighter weight cotton webbing, and natural leather tab material on both the main flap and the side pocket oiler flap. Very good quality sewing and sizing. This example is from K-Var. Note the black painted tab thorns. The pouch has all the features of the Russian pattern, to include (4) stripper clip slots, two on the front and two on the right side.
RIFLE SLING:
Standard Bulgarian AK rifle sling, used on all current Bulgarian models. All hardware is painted black, with distinctive silver flash chromed solid back rivets on the D-ring retaining bracket. The loop is also of a natural leather, although many of these slings as well as Bulgarian pouches have any of a number of leather colors.

MAGAZINE POUCH:
Another example of Bulgarian AK-74 pouch, a four cell design similar to above but with a heavier cotton webbing almost identical to Russian, and with brown leather tabs. Flap has Bulgarian inkstamps including the year of manufacture. Excellent fit and finish. Black painted tab thorns. Note the more blue-green color of the fabric.
RIFLE SLING:
This example of Bulgarian styled sling is the unique design for the AKSU. This is a copy of the Russian AKSU sling, but has black painted hardware and lighter weight webbing material. The leather and color of webbing is a perfect match for the pouch. Notice the sling has no hardware holding the D-ring to the webbing, and that the end of the sling is not sewn, but tipped with a sheet metal fitting. The belt buckle is not captive. This is the design also for the Russian version of this special sling. |

MAGAZINE POUCH:
Bulgarian Red Guard four cell magazine pouch. Standard Bulgarian pattern with two front tabs, and a low position side oiler pocket (as in Bulgarian AKM pattern). All leather trim is in dark red leather, matching the "Red Guard" beret and epaulets. Curiously, the two rear pockets perfectly fit AK-74 mags, while the front pockets are narrow and are not specifically designed for AK-74 mags. Two can be fitted into them with some effort. There are also many long thin slots inside for cleaning rods (?), cleaning kit, etc. Black tab thorns. |

MAGAZINE POUCH:
Polish KbK wz. 1988 and wz. 89 four cell magazine pouch, 5,45mm. This same pouch is also used for Beryl in 5.56mm NATO. Features usual stripper clip slots, side oiler bottle, natural leather tabs. Has a distinctive bipod holder on the right side, and the tab thorns are all of a brushed silver colored flash chrome. The bipod is of the clamp-on style and fits a collar on the rifle's barrel, or alternatively on the muzzle brake itself when an underbarrel grenade launcher is attached to the rifle.
RIFLE SLING: The Polish AK's have a very nice nylon rifle sling, used on both the Wz.88/89, Beryl, and the AKMS rifles. This sling is of a thin, tight weave with natural leather loop, and hard chromed D-ring, snap hook, ring retainer, and captive belt buckle. |

MAGAZINE POUCH:
Last example of the East German MPiAK-74 magazine pouch. features a four pocket design, nylon pull tabs, left side cleaning kit pocket, and four stripper clip slots in the usual locations. Nylon tabs are a shiny greenish gray color. All loops and hardware are painted green. This pouch fits AK-74 5,45mm exactly, however many call this pouch the "Wieger" StG 940 series pouch, which is actually a modified AK-74 in 5.56mm calibre. But the StG 940 uses a much shorter mag that would not fit these very well.
GRENADE POUCH:
There are matching harness sets with grenade pouches in this pattern. Like the magazine pouch it matches, the rear of the grenade pouch has both belt loops and wire type hangers. |

MAGAZINE POUCH:
Romanian AK-74 four cell magazine pouch, an improved copy of the late DDR design. Features large pleated accessory pockets on each side, four stripper clip slots in the usual locations, and double nylon pull-tab type closures on the front and sides. All nylon pull tabs match the synthetic sling material of the Romanian rifles. Cotton webbing material is the standard Romanian light weight type. I have seen several versions of these, some with heavier material and some with dark green thin type nylon tabs and some with golden-green tabs. All hardware is painted black.
RIFLE SLING:
Romanian early version of the nylon AK-74 sling, with a golden-green color and flexible weave. Hardware is blued metal. Features a nylon loop. | |

MAGAZINE POUCH:
This is a late Russian RPK-74 magazine pouch, with both shoulder sling and belt loops. It has the customary Russian thick dark yellow-olive webbing, dark brown tabs, and brown leather side oiler pocket. The four slots for the stripper clips has been moved to the entire front section of the pouch, and directly behind them is a large open pocket that goes from end to end. The four cells for magazines are sized for the 45-round 5.45mm magazines.
RIFLE SLING:
The RPK-74 uses the standard Russian AK sling pattern. This example is of lighter yellow ochre color. All hardware is cadmium plated. |
